Interview with Prof. Janoš and Assoc. Prof. Orava in the ECHO Magazine
The September issue of the ECHO magazine features an interview with Prof. Janoš and Assoc. Prof. Orava from the Department of Environmental Chemistry and Technology discussing the INNERANT project, which is being conducted under the Horizon Europe – Batt4EU program call. The project focuses on the development of new materials to enhance the safety, particularly the non-flammability, of 3rd generation lithium batteries, primarily designed for electromobility. The project directly responds to the European Commission’s challenge “New approaches to developing improved safety materials for 3rd generation lithium batteries for e-mobility applications.”
In addition to the Faculty of the Environment, the project also involves the Faculty of Science at UJEP, in collaboration with commercial entities from the application sphere, namely NanoSPACE Technology s.r.o. and IBG Česko s.r.o. The main objective is to develop protective mechanisms against battery overheating and the associated fire risk, which will lead to increased safety during lithium battery operation. Another partial research goal is to develop technology for recycling rare components of lithium batteries (particularly critical elements such as Li, Mn, Ni, Co, Al, Cu, graphite), including plastics that can be used for the production of alternative fuels. All this is done with an emphasis on maintaining the principles of circular economy and sustainability.
The project is designed as a three-year initiative with a duration of 36 months and a total budget of nearly 4.5 million EUR.
